Julia's Perfect Fit

 Julias perfect fit

This is my new car! After my old Honda Accord started to die, I decided I was ready for something new. In one week I bought this wonderful, brand new Honda Fit 2008! I'm just loving it.

Team in Training

I'm challenging myself. I'm trying to raise $2,400 and run a 1/2 marathon. It's been good so far. I'm up to running 10 miles and have 85% of my fundraising dollars.

Racing to Save Lives

Being a participant in Team in Training has taught me many valuable lessons. While I am still training for my marathon, I am learning about the stories and the families that have also, unfortunately met with cancer.

Along with my Grandmother June, I will run in Honor of Patricia McCormick Nye and Brian Johnson.

Brian Johnson

Today there are many stories; stories of survival and challenging cancer. I have been fortunate enough to meet Brian Johnson. I met Brian on the field playing Ultimate Frisbee, a fast past game that requires Frisbee coordination and running- as well as a passion for life. Brian exudes that and more. He is not only an active, athletic individual, but also a father of three. Unfortunately Brian was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma December 11, 2006. His abdomen had been feeling odd, off and on, since October of 2006. He started Chemotherapy January 11, 2007. I will run thinking about Brian and sending my good wishes to a speedy recovery. Please read his story and see his pictures at: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/brianjohnson.

Patricia McCormick Nye

Patricia Nye was in her 30’s when she died of Leukemia. I first learned of her story when her son, Ossie Nye kindly gave me a donation and let my father know of his similar story. I was so saddened by the similarities- a young mother dying and not seeing her children grow. Ossie was kind enough to pass on my information about my run to cure cancer. I was even more awed when his sister, Deborah e-mailed me a couple days later. It was so wonderful to remember Patricia even after all these years. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to have known her memory.

Deborah recently shared this story with me, “Yesterday I took my two beautiful wonderful well behaved (ok maybe not) children to the grocery store and then to get sub sandwiches, and my 4 year old after a day in preschool was having a meltdown all over the place, outside of one store she was actually jumping up and down screaming and I was thinking to myself (what the heck?) then I flashed back to my mother who couldn't stand to spank us, she was too softhearted, and I had really really misbehaved, so she was going to spank me and I was running around with my hands over my bottom screaming no, no, no, please, I promise I'll be good!!! So life seems to come full circle for all of us. I guess I would add that she was a wonderful mother who was loved fiercely by her three children. Thank you again, I can't tell you what it means to us that you are doing this.”

Thank you everyone for all your support. Everything you give- the kind words of encouragement and the helpful fundraising dollars to the cause makes so much difference. I am grateful to be doing this great event and to be part of your lives.

In Sacramento- finally

I did it- after thinking about this for over a year, I finally left good ol' San Jose and moved out to Sacramento. I've been given a very warm welcome- it's been over 100 for the last three days. I got a small apartment nearby James' place. It has a weird smell and I don't like it too much. That's okay- since I haven't slept there yet and I've been in Sac for almost a week.

I've been spending nights with James and it is soo nice to be with him more. I love just coming home and relaxing with him. He's a bit of a cuddle bunny on the couch.

He's also really good with Oreo- my rabbit. He wants to keep the bunny indoors since it's so hot out. He keeps a close eye on him and loves to hold him and feed him carrots. It's really cute.

I'm getting close with James' friends. It's nice to come in and have a network of people. For the fourth of July we went to 2 barbecues and a neighborhood fireworks party.

It has been a really easy transition. My new team at work are really inviting and it's the same position that I've enjoyed for the  last two years. So far, so good.

I do miss my wonderful family and my great friends. Please call me anytime!!

Lots of love,

Julia

skydiving

I learned a valuable lesson this past week- don't go skydiving with ear infections!!

Dan and I went skydiving in Monterey. This is something I've always wanted to do- and here was my special chance. I felt great- not scared or nervous. My cute instructor was attached to me (literally) and we jumped from 18,000 feet. (The highest jump possible.) My thoughts were "Wow this is cool. I'm really free falling and D*#% it really hurts my ears...I should enjoy this incredible once in a lifetime experience...it's beautiful...and painful. Geez, I feel like my head is going to explode! Okay...concentrate...smile for the camera...this is cool...but I don't think I'll do it again."

I got down and my head was aching. Dan told me to pop my ears- but I knew it was more. I cried it hurt so bad! The next day I went to the doctor and low and behold I have a middle ear infection in both ears! I must have had it before the jump and not noticed. The fast decent definitely inflamed the infection. Oh well. I'm on my last day of anti-biotics and feeling much better.

Although it was a gorgeous jump and an exhilarating experience, I think I'll leave it as a once-in-a-lifetime jump.

Heros

In light of the horrific events last week, I encourage you to read about a hero. Liviu Librescu is a 76 year old holocaust survivor. He threw himself again the class room door during the VT massacre. He was shot 5 times, but gave the opportunity for almost his students to escape though windows. He is a true hero.

(Thank you Anjana for your inspiring journal entry about Liviu.)
